The City of Lynn and Town of Swampscott will be conducting a pilot program this summer using ultraviolet (UV) light to disinfect stormwater before it discharges onto a public beach. The communities of Lynn and Swampscott are looking for intern assistance with daily sampling of various parameters of stormwater upstream/downstream of the UV pilot unit to evaluate the efficacy of UV as a disinfectant for the purpose of deactivating bacteria and protecting public health at a recreational swimming beach. There will also be prospective beach testing.
We are in search of undergrad or graduate level student(s) to assist with the water quality sampling associated with this pilot. This is an unpaid, three-month internship.
The testing will need to be complete each weekday and it will take up to 3 hours to conduct the testing. Weekend availability may be requested. Interns must be able to commit to a minimum of four days.
The exact timing of the testing may need to vary based upon the tidal conditions. The sampling is expected to include grab sampling from the UV pilot tank to be analyzed in a lab as well as using on-site multi-parameter water quality probes and a benchtop UV transmittance apparatus. Training on testing methods and instruments used in the sampling will be provided.
