Our Collection
The Main Hall — Just as the Last Veteran Left It
The crown jewel of the museum is the magnificent 56' x 46' Main Hall on the third floor, preserved exactly as it was when the last G.A.R. veteran walked out. Within the hall you will find:
• 1,243 photographs of the original Post members lining the walls
• The original rug and furnishings
• The capstan from the USS Kearsarge, famous for its 1864 battle off Brest, France with the Confederate raider Alabama
Additional Artifacts in the Collection Include:
• The beautiful Lincoln & Grant Library, featuring original terrazzo floors and a massive built-in bookcase housing our research collection
• A Confederate “Stars and Bars” flag
• General Frederick W. Lander’s boots and saddle
• Artifacts spanning from the Revolutionary War through the Korean War
Exhibitions Include:
• A refreshed and updated exhibit on Civil War Medicine
• The remarkable story of “The Meeting of the Blue and the Gray,” when General Lander Post #5 G.A.R. hosted General Lee Camp #1 in Lynn, followed by Post #5’s historic visit to Richmond, Virginia
