March Monthly Health Theme - National Sleep Awareness Month

March is National Sleep Awareness Month, quality sleep is essential to overall health. According to the CDC, 14.5% of adults report difficulty falling asleep, while 17.8% struggle to stay asleep. These challenges can be significantly impact both physical health and emotional wellness, making it essential to prioritize good sleep habits.

What is Sleep Hygiene?

Sleep hygiene refers to a set of routines and habits designed to promote consistent, high-quality sleep. Small changes in your daily routine can make a big difference in how well you rest each night.

Tips for Better Sleep:

  • Stick to a consistent schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day
  • Reduce or mask noise and light—try a white noise machine and blackout curtains
  • Keep your bedroom cool, comfortable, and relaxing (ideally between 65℉ and 68℉)
  • Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime and keep them out of the bedroom
  • Avoid large meals and alcohol close to bedtime
  • Limit caffeine in the afternoon and evening, especially if you’re sensitive to its effects
  • Exercise regularly and maintain a balanced, healthy diet

While good sleep hygiene can greatly improve rest, some individuals may continue to experience sleep disturbances despite their best efforts. In these cases, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional, as ongoing sleep issues may be a sign of an underlying sleep disorder or other health condition. Making sleep a priority is one of the most impactful steps you can take toward better health.
