The City of Lynn Opioid Working Group Launches the Bright Futures Fund to
Support Youth Impacted by Substance Use
The City of Lynn’s Opioid Working Group (OWG) is proud to announce the launch of the Bright Futures Fund, a new initiative dedicated to supporting young people whose lives have been affected by substance use. In 2023 alone, an estimated 19 million children under the age of 18, one in four across the United States, lived with at least one parent struggling with a substance use disorder (SUD).
Through this fund, OWG aims to empower youth in their pursuit of academic and personal success, while working to dismantle the stigma surrounding addiction. We believe that substance use disorder is a medical condition, not a defining characteristic, and that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances.
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to two students at each of the following schools:
- Lynn Classical
- Lynn English
- Lynn Tech
- Frederick Douglass Collegiate Academy
- Harold Durgin Success Academy (Fecteau-Leary)
- KIPP Academy
- CASA
- St. Mary’s
To apply, students must email [email protected] with the following:
- A reference letter from a teacher or counselor
- An essay or video addressing the following prompts:
- The essay inclusive of all three questions must be at least 500 words
- The video inclusive of all three questions must be at least 5 minutes
Questions:
- What your plans after high school and how will this scholarship help you reach your goals?
- How has your relationship(s) with family or friends who use drugs made an impact on your life?
- What might you tell younger people who have family that use substances or have lost someone to substance use?
Applications are will be open March of 2026 and scholarships will be announced June 2026.
