MassDOT Construction - Extended Closure of Navigational Channel
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing the United States Coast Guard (USCG) granted an extension of the temporary channel closure along the Saugus River where marine vessels will not have full access to travel under the Route 107 bridge to the Lynn or Saugus harbors. The channel closure, which went into effect on Tuesday, February 6, will remain in place as a partial closure through Wednesday, May 15 and is necessary to allow crews to safely and effectively install the new bascule bridge across the navigational channel.
While the work proceeds, the bascule span of the new bridge will be in the closed position. The clearance beneath the new span is approximately 16 feet above mean low water. Beginning on May 1, vessels able to safely navigate beneath the new bridge span without an opening will be free to do so upon communication with support vessels and the bridge tender. Mariners must request an opening of the temporary bridge from the bridge operator if needed for safe passage.
The channel closure will have no impact on pedestrian or vehicular travel along Route 107.
This work is part of a $99.3 million drawbridge replacement project. The project is currently expected to be completed in March 2026.
Drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution. Appropriate signage, law enforcement details, and advanced message boards will be in place to guide drivers through the work area.
All scheduled work is weather dependent and/or may be impacted due to an emergency.
