Duties:
The Detention Attendant plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of individuals in police custody. This position involves monitoring detainees, conducting searches, reporting concerns, and supporting departmental procedures in the care and custody of individuals held at the police facility. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and the ability to respond effectively in high pressure or emotionally charged situations.
Qualifications:
Detention Attendants are assigned to the Patrol Division under the command of the Patrol Division Captain with direct supervision from the on duty Officer in Charge (OIC). Administrative requests for time off and similar personnel matters are coordinated by the Senior Cell Attendant in Charge.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Conduct searches of female detainees when requested by Department personnel and secure all property according to Department protocols.
• Monitor male and female detainees through direct observation and closed-circuit video systems in accordance with Department procedures.
• Complete initial and ongoing physical inspections of unoccupied and occupied cells; report and document any damage or presence of contraband immediately.
• Maintain accurate records of detainee status, movement, and observations as required.
• Communicate effectively and respectfully with individuals in custody, including those who may be intoxicated, agitated, or suffering from mental illness.
• Notify Department personnel promptly of any detainee emergency, medical condition, or unusual behavior and assist with treatment or care as directed.
• Accompany female detainees to court or other locations when assigned.
• Remain on station premises during assigned shift unless otherwise directed by a supervising officer.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief of Police, Deputy Chiefs, Captain of Patrol, or other designated supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
• Prior experience in a detention, correctional, or law enforcement setting preferred.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of required training and certification for the position.
• Strong conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
• Proficiency with security equipment, surveillance systems, and basic computer applications.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Bilingual/bicultural candidates strongly preferred.
