Statement from Mayor Thomas M. McGee:

Our top priority for the last 18 months has been to ensure the safety and health of all of our residents. We must remain vigilant in the public health successes we have achieved to date, and that requires being proactive and following the science that wearing a mask reduces transmission and vaccines reduce the severity of illness. There is also consideration for residents who are vulnerable because of their age or health status, and children who are below the allowable age for vaccination.

The City of Lynn, in partnership with Lynn Community Health Center, has successfully worked with the residents to become vaccinated. Of our total eligible population, 76% has received at least one dose, and 69% is fully vaccinated. Nevertheless, with the Centers for Disease Control advising that Essex County is once again at a “substantial risk” for transmission of COVID-19 and updating their mask wearing guidance, the emergence of the Delta variant, and rising case numbers in Lynn and surrounding communities, the following policies are being reinstated effective Thursday, August 12, 2021.

• ALL employees, regardless of vaccination status, are required to wear a mask that covers their mouth and nose while inside on duty during work hours except for when they are seated at their cubicle/work station or using break time to eat or drink. This includes common areas (i.e. in hallways and stairwells, going to the restroom, etc.), during meetings, in city vehicles when occupied by more than one employee at a time, and interacting with the public. Members of the general public must also wear face coverings while conducting business in city buildings. If a visitor does not have a mask, they should be offered one by the department visited and business should not be conducted until the face covering is in place.

• This policy shall also go into effect for school buildings, and respective employees currently working in them on the above date, and will be required at the start of the school year for returning staff and students, regardless of vaccination status.

• City boards and commissions are encouraged to continue meeting remotely, however if meetings do take place in person, masks must be worn by all in attendance.

• All Lynn Auditorium staff and show attendees are required to wear masks, unless eating or drinking.

We strongly encourage Lynn businesses and their patrons to follow this lead and adopt the CDC guidelines for wearing masks in indoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status.

As we implement these steps, we will continue to work with state and federal officials and public health experts to adjust our guidance in response to emerging scientific data, encourage and help all residents to become fully vaccinated, and ensure that adequate testing remains available to all who may need it.
