City of Lynn Offers Affordable Home Composter and Training
The City of Lynn is now offering the home composter called the “Earth Machine” for $25 at the Department of Public Works (D.P.W.) thanks to funding from Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. In addition, the City is offering trainings on how to compost by partnering with community groups such as the Food Project, the Lynn Community Garden Program and the Cook Street Garden. The first training will be offered at the Lynn Farm Fest on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 11-3pm at the Food Project’s Munroe Street Farm. Other trainings are now being scheduled with other partners.
“We are offering these composters and training to Lynn residents because it will decrease solid waste in the city of Lynn, and because it makes for a better city with more people composting and gardening” said Lisa Nerich, Associate Commissioner of Lynn D.P.W. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) estimates that food waste accounts for more than 25 percent of the waste stream in Massachusetts after recycling, that’s over 1 million tons per year. Diverting these materials from disposal facilities reduces the amount of waste going to landfills and incinerators and conserves natural resources. Right now only 10% of food waste is diverted. According to Mary Gatlin of the Lynn Community Gardens Program “Composting is a great way to divert food waste for residents, especially if they garden. The composting process turns organic material, such as food waste, leaf and yard waste, and waxed cardboard into a rich soil amendment that will both improve their garden and lower the carbon footprint of the soil, and there is no cost other than the purchase of the composter”.
Residents can download an order form from the Lynn DPW website and either mail in the form along with a check for $25 or take it into the Lynn D.P.W. and pay either with cash or a check.
