Message from Council President Darren P. Cyr, Councilor Ward Three

In May, 2017, the Lynn School Committee approved a request to attempt to sell the former Thurgood Marshall Middle School on Porter Street.  City elected and appointed officials have met with developers who believe that this now vacant building could be renovated into residential and commercial space.  A Request for Proposal Committee has been formed to determine the best use of this property for the City and especially the surrounding neighborhood.

This Committee has recommended to amend the City of Lynn Zone Ordinance in order to maximize the full developmental potential of this site.  A Public Hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 8 PM. to consider these zoning changes.  The proposed amendment would allow as a matter of right the construction of apartment units and possibly commercial space on the first floor.  The zoning changes would also reduce the parking requirements as they presently exist.  The City Council actively seeks public input on the future development of this site and encourages all interested citizens of Lynn to attend this Public Hearing.

The current plan would be that the City would seek proposals for a development of an elderly apartment complex at this site.  Presently, there are extremely long waiting lists for existing elderly housing complexes in Lynn.  There is clearly a need in the City of Lynn for further elderly housing.  However, the final Request for Proposals to transfer this property will depend upon the wishes of the general public.

The City Council will endeavor to provide regular updates relating to this project as such information becomes available.
